Lesson 7: Writing a memoir

Learning intention

We are learning to edit our writing.

Success criteria

I have read over my work and made some changes to check I have achieved my writing goal.

Lesson structure

  1. Model the editing process with a sample sentence and a writing goal. e.g:
    • My goal is to use capital letters for names and the start of sentences.
    • I need to check my work to see if I have capital letters.
    • Oh no, I forgot to make a capital ‘W’ for the start of my sentence.
    • I better fix that with my red pencil.
  2. Ask students to refer to their writing goal stapled on the corner of their work. Have they met their goal? What do they need to do to meet it? Give students time to edit with a coloured pencil.
  3. As students edit, individually conference with students to ensure all components of the memoir and secretarial items are correct.
