Accessing inappropriate websites

Example situation one

During a school-based lunch break Teacher H logs into www.youtube.com and watches 20 minutes of Ultimate Fighting Championships. After watching the fight, Teacher H logs out of YouTube and begins researching an upcoming lesson. (Via a network and/or computer owned or leased by the DET.)

In terms of your professional practice consider:

  • the sites viewed are stored in the computers history. Users that search with similar search terms will have recent searches listed high on their results list.

DET recommends:

  • DET employees in schools do not deliberately access sites that do not have a valid educational purpose when using school owned devices which can now include smart phones, netbooks, desktops, iPads, tablets.

Example situation two

During a school-based lunch break Teacher I uses Google to search for websites that could be used to engage students in Mathematics lessons. While searching Teacher I accesses a site dedicated to Adults Only rated content including pornography. Teacher I immediately exits the site and logs out of the computer but tells no one. (Via a network and/or computer owned or leased by the DET.)

In terms of your professional practice consider:

  • the sites viewed are stored in the computers history. Users that search with similar search terms will have recent searches listed high on their results list.

DET recommends:

  • DET employees in schools who accidentally access inappropriate sites that are not educational when using school owned devices should notify their ICT coordinator and leadership team to establish whether further action is required to block access to the content or erase the history.
