The Victorian Deaf Education Institute (VDEI) is hosting live webinars in July to provide opportunities for educators and education professionals to engage in online professional learning to help them support students who are deaf or hard of hearing.

The webinars will feature local and international experts from the deaf and inclusive education fields and will cover a range of topics to connect research with leading professional practice. Participants will gain practical resources and knowledge to implement as part of their work with students who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Understanding the triggers – supporting students who are deaf or hard of hearing

Students who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH) experience complex challenges in relation to their personal and social lives. In this live online webinar, Counsellor, Family Therapist and experienced Teacher of the Deaf, Paula Zalcberg, will provide a practical overview of the triggers and signals that should alert teachers and other professionals that students are under stress or experiencing trauma in their lives.

Focus will be given to the relationship between family, home life and student learning. Paula will assist participants to recognise when to refer a student for additional support by a specialist counsellor or therapist, as well as discussing key strategies to keep students engaged, motivated and in control of their learning.
