Buses or alternative modes of transport to get children safely to kindergarten. This is intended for children in rural areas where there is no other way for children to travel to kindergarten. Services must transport children safely and meet legislative requirements for road safety and operate under the National Quality Framework.
All staff working with kindergarten services as part of a transport program are required to work in accordance with the Victorian Early Years Learning and Development Framework.
This will be determined by the options available to the kindergarten service.
Target population: children who are eligible to attend a kindergarten program but are not attending regularly or their attendance is sporadic due to family transport constraints.
Factors to consider: a number of factors will need to be taken into account when considering setting up a transport service for children at your service.
These include, but are not limited to:
- staff costs i.e. the cost of the driver and educator/supervisor. Note that all staff working with children are required by law to have a valid Working with Children's Check
- booster seats and restraints for children
- the vehicle used for transportation and it's safety requirements
- running costs such as fuel and maintenance of the vehicle
It is important that your service determines how you will manage all occupational health and safety considerations and ensure that the service is safe and minimises risks to children and staff.
A transport service should be run in line with the Victorian Early Years Learning and Development Framework with particular consideration for the practice principle 'partnerships with families'.
services may need to consider how your staff will organise their time to run this program, with consideration of extra working hours or backfill costs.
