Description
Learn to Be Safe with Emmy and Friends teaches early childhood education and care professionals to deliver the Learn to Be Safe protective behaviours program. The Learn to Be Safe program is delivered in education settings across Australia and provides an approach to remedy the challenges faced by early years professionals to deliver consent-based protective behaviours education to children.
The program includes a 1-hour online self-paced knowledge session, a 2-hour online, facilitated group knowledge session, and eight 45-minute online group coaching/mentoring sessions. Upon completion of the training, participants will be able to:
- Define protective behaviours and outline why it is necessary to teach protective behaviours to young children
- Understand and apply the Learn to Be Safe protective behaviours framework and program (Safety Threads and Learning Beads)
- Use the Learn to Be Safe Learning Guide and resources to teach children aged 0-5 about protective behaviours
- Know how to respond to a child’s disclosure in an early years setting
- Apply protective strategies including one-step removed problem solving, trauma informed language of safety and protective interruption
- Promote a child-safe environment in an early year setting
Detailed Costs
Learn to Be Safe with Emmy and Friends training program: $450 per person
Costs are based on a minimum group of 10 people, with additional costs incurred for smaller groups. Larger services are able to negotiate packages for whole of organisation training.
Face-to-face training can be negotiated, and additional costs incurred including travel, accommodation, administration and wages.
Implementation Considerations
Target population: early childhood education and care professionals including leadership staff, educators, assistants and trainees.
Program/practice descriptions and details: the program is delivered online and consists of a 1-hour self-paced knowledge session, a 2-hour group facilitated knowledge session, eight 45-minute group coaching and mentoring sessions, 10 training videos, a learning guide and additional online resources. Parent resources are provided to support professionals to engage with parents, family and community about protective behaviours and support conversations in the home.The program will take approximately 9 hours to complete.
Staffing: services should consider the cost of backfill when determining the cost of accessing this resource.
Supervision/Coaching: the program consists of eight 45-minute group coaching and mentoring sessions.
Tools and systems: educators will need a computer or laptop with access to the internet and Microsoft Teams.
