    Description

    ​This professional learning bundle is a collection of materials including online learning modules, webcasts and ECA publications, curated by ECA to support educators to build knowledge and contemporary practices around behaviour and self-regulation in the early years. It includes: 

    • Supporting Children’s Self-Regulation Ages 3-5 (online learning module)

    • Emotion Coaching: A Transformational Tool (online webcast presentation)

    • Children’s Behaviour: A Guiding Approach (hardcopy)

    • Helping Children with Difficult Things (hardcopy)

    • Learning Positive Behaviour Through Educator-Child Relationships (hardcopy)

    • The Circle of Security: Roadmap to Building Supportive Relationships (hardcopy)

    After completing this professional learning bundle, educators will have explored a range of topics including:

    • self-regulation as a skill developing in early childhood that underpins all future learning and wellbeing

    • how to draw on and use ‘emotion coaching’ techniques in various situations

    • the role of educators and relationships in supporting behaviour and self-regulation, including recognising and responding to signs of stress in young children and considering values and beliefs behind children’s behaviour

    • utilising a guiding approach with children’s behaviour and assisting children to identify behaviour and self-regulate emotions

    • the ‘circle of security’ roadmap, and how to use it to create secure opportunities for children to learn by meeting their relationships needs.

    Implementation Considerations

    Target population: educators and teachers working in early childhood services.

    Program/practice descriptions and details: the professional learning bundle is a blended, flexible, self-assessed program that can be used by individuals or teams. It integrates online learning and professional reading, two research-based approaches for engagement in sustained learning. Fact sheets with tips and ideas on implementation are available. There are also opportunities for educators to take their learning further with additional reading and resources suggestions.

    Program adaptability: provider is experienced in delivering professional learning to rural and remote services. All content undergoes independent quality assurance reviews before being made available.

    Staffing: services should consider the cost of backfill in determining the cost of accessing this resource.

    Training requirements: suitable for early childhood educators at all stages of their career. There are no minimum numbers and the package can be scaled to suit all service types and sizes.

    Supervision/coaching: services receive a ‘how-to’ guide as well as phone and email support to set up and make the most of the learning management system and the online learning.

    Implementation model: the bundle can be used flexibly, by individuals or teams. Publications can be shared with families and across educator teams; webcasts can be viewed in groups or as a whole team; and online learning modules can be utilised by individual educators and reflected upon with the whole team. Services can access the online learning for 12 months, as well as the provider’s learning management system, to track professional learning and download or print completion certificates.

    Tools and systems: a PC or tablet with reliable internet access is needed.

    Australian experience: the provider is regarded as the peak early childhood advocacy organisation in Australia, acting in the interests of young children, their families and those in the early childhood field. Its quality assurance protocol includes monitoring content for relevance to the Australian early childhood community.

    Current best implementation knowledge: the bundle is designed to be used flexibly. Services are in control of their learning and implement change according to their needs.
