ABC and Beyond: The Hanen Program for Building Emergent Literacy in Early Childhood Settings is part of a suite of programs developed by the Hanen centre to promote children's language and literacy development.
The program is designed to teach early childhood educators to promote the emergent literacy skills that all children need to help them read and write successfully, including:
- oral language
- story comprehension
- language of learning
- print knowledge
- phonological awareness.
The program can be delivered by a Hanen-certified professional with either a speech pathology or early childhood education background.
The ABC and Beyond: Building Emergent Literacy in Early Childhood Settings guidebook: US$45 (approx. AU$63).
Costs for delivery by a Hanen-certified professional will vary depending on the provider.
Target population: the program is for early childhood educators working with preschool-aged children.
Staffing: educators will be required to attend seven workshops (approx. 15 hours) and participate in three, one-hour videotaping and feedback sessions. Consider backfill costs associated with this item.
Factors to consider: having more than one staff member attend the workshop may help embed strategies at the service. This will ensure that improved approaches to practice or innovative ideas can be implemented across the service as a whole.
The program must be delivered by a Hanen-certified Early Childhood Educator or Speech Pathologist who has current Hanen membership.
Training requirements: training can be delivered to a group of up to 20 educators. The program consists of:
seven interactive and engaging training sessions that address the six building blocks of literacy
three individual coaching, videotaping and feedback sessions in which participants practice using ABC and Beyond strategies with children in their classrooms
user-friendly resources to support learning.
Supervision/coaching: educators participate in coaching via three videotaping and feedback sessions.
