The following resources can help young Koorie people and others working with Koorie young people to explore pathways to work, look at opportunities in training, apprenticeships and traineeships, direct employment, self-employment and volunteering opportunities.  Access information and resources that help provide opportunities to gain employment in a variety of areas.

Exploring pathways to work

Work Experience and Structured Workplace Learning is part of school career programs and VCE Vocational Education and Training (VET), Vocational Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) and school-based apprenticeships and traineeships (SBA and SBT). Find out about these industry experiences arranged whilst at school and the fantastic opportunity to get first hand, on the job experience or training.

Leaving School Early If you're planning to leave school before Year 12, there's information about the best career options available to you that can help you choose your future.

Beyond School is the Department of Education and Training starting place for all Victorian government school students and parents for information about career pathways and planning.

Pathways after School can be confusing and overwhelming when thinking about work and life after secondary school, but there is support available to help young people explore and choose a career pathway. Choices include starting an apprenticeship or traineeship, continuing with further study, finding work, starting a business or even taking a gap year.

Career Websites is the Department of Education and Training comprehensive list of all relevant career information, career planning and pathways information, training, industry and skill shortage information, web links to all TAFE, Universities, Tertiary education information for students and parents and careers associations.

Myfuture is a major career website that provides information about industries, occupations, study choices, scholarships, education and training providers, regional employment trends and lots of resources.

Koorie Youth Council provides young people with a voice and access to information about services, work, study, health, culture and fun.

Youth Central Hub is an Australian government website to give young people information about Health, Education and Work, Community, Culture, Environment and Finance. Youth.gov.au website gives students and families access to key career information, work, training, further study, scholarships, support, initiatives and Indigenous programs available for young people. 

Indigenous Nursing Cadetship Opportunity - Blue Care specialise in Aged Care facilities including nursing homes, community nursing, Home and Community Care packages and many more, focused in rural Queensland.

Training

The Victorian Skills Gateway is a one-stop-shop of Victorian vocational education and training to help find the best option for you. It has been developed by the Victorian Department of Education and Training. 

My Skills, Australian Directory of Training is a website is the national directory of vocational education and training (VET) organisations and courses. It is a federal government initiative to enable consumers to search for and compare, VET courses and training providers.

Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) are contracted as providers of Victorian government-subsidised training to students. Funding is provided through the Victorian Training Guarantee Program.

Apprenticeships and traineeships

Australian Apprenticeships provides comprehensive information about Australian apprenticeships, networks and programs.

Victorian School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships are available to students whilst still at school. Information to help about beginning or continuing an apprenticeship is available through the Department of Education and Training and Victorian Skill Gateway 

ANZ Indigenous School Based Traineeshipsencourages Year 10 Indigenous School Based Traineeship Program across Australia to apply for a position with ANZ's whilst undertaking Year 11 and 12 at school. 

The two year program has recruited more than 400 Indigenous Trainees in branches across Australia since 2003.  Students undertake a paid traineeship in an ANZ branch for at least one day a week and complete a Certificate II qualification in Business at TAFE whilst finishing their secondary education. MacKillop Family Services offers Koorie Youth Traineeships in Community Relations (marketing, communications and fundraising), Finance, IT Support, Training/Learning and Development, Quality and Innovation and property and Facilities Management. 

Enquire if aged 18 to 26 years and of Aboriginal background or Torres Strait Islander descent, for a Koorie Youth Traineeship with MacKillop Family Services and the Victorian Aboriginal Child Care Agency (VACCA).

Indigenous Apprenticeships Program is the Commonwealth Department of Human Services Indigenous Apprenticeships program supports the education and professional development of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians. As apprentices complete their study they are offered a position with the department.​

Self-Employment

New Enterprise Incentive Scheme (NEIS) helps eligible unemployed people aged 18 years and over to start and run their businesses. Under NEIS, jobseekers receive accredited small business training, business advice and mentoring, as well as ongoing income support for up to 39 weeks.

Getting Down to Business is an innovative new Victorian Department of Human Services program for young people aged 16 – 25 years with a passion for enterprise – whether you’re looking to kick start your business idea or take your venture to the next level, this program helps transform your ideas into reality.

The Foundation for Young Australians (FYA) is a not-for-profit organisation is committed to developing innovative initiatives that support 12 to 25-year-olds.

Business Victoria is a comprehensive online resource designed to help you start, run and grow your business published by the State Government of Victoria, Australia and managed by the Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources (DEDJTR).

Fairwork is a government website that provides information and advice about workplace rights and obligations.

Commonwealth Business Entry Point has information on licensing, taxation, employment, importing and exporting, and statistics.

Volunteering Opportunities for Koorie Young People

Indigenous Community Volunteers - An independent, not-for-profit company that provides volunteers to work on projects in Indigenous communities in urban, rural or remote areas. The site gives information about the skills required of volunteers, current projects, volunteering opportunities and the application process for volunteers.

Volunteering Australia - Promotes volunteering within the Australian community. Using the GoVolunteer section potential volunteers can research volunteer organisations and search for volunteering opportunities within Australia by the organisation, position type or location. The site also offers information on volunteer training and provides resources and skills development materials to support the volunteer sector.
