Other Services

Industry overview

The Other Services industry includes a range of personal care services, such as hair, beauty and diet and weight management services; providing death care services; promoting or administering religious events or activities; or promoting and defending the interests of their members. Also included are repairing and/or maintaining cars and other equipment and machinery (except ships, boats, aircraft, or railway rolling stock) or other items (except buildings).

  • Other Services contributed $6.1 billion to Victoria's output in 2013-14, representing 2 per cent of the total.
  • The sector employs approximately 109,300 people, with a growth of 3 per cent over the past five years, with the largest growth in Personal and Other Services.

Industry training

  • Other Services related courses accounted for 20,277 government subsidised enrolments in 2014. TAFE fee-for-service provision in the sector had 4,056 enrolments.
  • Apprenticeships grew by 1 per cent to 6,780 government subsidised enrolments between 2009 and 2014.
  • Traineeships decreased by 53 per cent to 310 government subsidised enrolments between 2009 and 2014.
  • In 2014, 41 per cent of government subsidised enrolments related to specialised or in shortage occupations.
  • There were 87 training providers delivering government subsidised training related to the Other Services sector in 2014. TAFEs delivered 40 per cent of government subsidised enrolments in 2014. Private Registered Training Organisations' (RTOs) share of government subsidised vocational training was 53 per cent of all enrolments in 2014.

​Bicycle Industry Training Project

In October 2013, the Bicycle Industry Training Project was initiated and funded under the Industry Transition and Specialist Training Initiative. The aim of the project was to identify and analyse the critical challenges in delivering bicycle industry retail, service and repair training that meets stakeholder needs in Victoria. A Project Steering Group with representatives from industry, employers, Registered Training Providers (RTOs) and the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (DEECD) was established to facilitate the research project.

The project undertook an extensive round of consultation with employers, industry associations, training providers and learners in Victoria and other states.

The report presents a wide range of options on both the demand and supply sides of training that will assist the bicycle industry develop appropriate mechanisms to support workforce development.
