 Assessment years 3-6 (ages 9-12)

Typically for students in years 3-6, the nature and purpose of the reading tasks and the texts that they read become increasingly complex. Expectations of their ability to read and comprehend texts to learn new and challenging content are demanding, especially for students with reading difficulties and/or disabilities, such as dyslexia. 

These students may need additional practise with, or explicit teaching of, foundational knowledge in reading and viewing, writing, speaking and listening. Increased experiences with and exposure to oral language also support reading comprehension.

Assessing the following aspects of knowledge in reading development will support in the identification of students with reading difficulties and dyslexia:
