A training fee subsidy is where the government contributes towards the cost of your training course. You may also see this referred to as the Victorian Training Guarantee.
It is offered by providers who have a contract with the Victorian Government.
Check if you can get a subsidy
You must meet certain criteria to get subsidised training. This will be checked by your training provider when you enrol.
You can get an idea of whether you qualify by using the
checker on the Victorian Skills Gateway website.
You can also
search for subsidised courses.
You can start a maximum of two subsidised courses at the same qualification level in your lifetime. This applies whether or not you complete the courses.
For example, this means if you have already commenced two courses at the Certificate 3 level, you may only commence courses at the Certificate 4 level (or above).
This restriction does not apply to courses on the Foundation Skills List or to students recommencing training in the same qualification (at the same or a different provider).
You can get subsidised training as an apprentice if your previously started courses are listed on the pre-apprenticeship and pathway qualifications list:
Pre-apprenticeship and pathway qualifications list (pdf - 18.78kb)
Pre-apprenticeship and pathway qualifications list (docx - 33.87kb)
If you can't get a subsidy
You can still study at your chosen provider if places are available, but you may not be able to access a government-subsidised place.
Some training providers don't provide government-subsidised training places and charge full fee for service rates. Some courses are only offered as full fee for service.
You can also check the other ways to
get help with your training fees.
TAFE courses with free tuition
From 1 January 2019, some priority
TAFE courses will be offered with free tuition.
The best place to start is to research and choose the training provider that is going to meet your training needs.
