For employers

What you need to know

Employing an apprentice or trainee is an investment in the future of your business.

You will give someone an opportunity to train, study and earn an income, while contributing to your annual turnover.

Apprenticeships and traineeships combine on-the-job and formal training towards qualifications in more than 500 occupations and trades, from certificates through to advanced diplomas.

When you take on an apprentice or trainee, you will enter into a formal agreement known as a training contract. The contract will outline your obligations as an employer.

To understand these obligations, see:

There will also be a training plan for the apprentice or trainee that you, the apprentice and the registered training organisation will need to agree to. This may include the timing, location, and type of training needed for them to achieve their qualification, and for you to meet your business needs.

You may be eligible for financial assistance and incentives.
