​Out-​​of-school-hours programs offering language teaching for students who cannot access the language of their choice in their mainstream school.

Victorian School of Languages (VSL)

The Victorian School of Languages (VSL) is a specialist government school that offers language programs in over 50 languages to students from year 1 to year 12. Classes usually take place on Saturday mornings in 42 metropolitan and regional centres.

The VSL also provides distance education programs in 12 languages for secondary students.

Distance education language programs now open to Year 6 students

Year 6 students can now enrol in a Victorian School of Languages (VSL) distance education language program. The new distance education language programs will support highly able students, home school students, students who have had exposure to language during an extended period overseas, and students wishing to learn their home or heritage language.

Initially four languages (French, German, Indonesian, and Italian) will be available and others will be rolled out during 2019.  In 2020, eligible Year 5 students will also be able to enrol in these programs.

Eligibility

To enrol in a VSL distance education language, Year 6 students (and Year 5 students from 2020) must meet the following requirements:

  • the language is not available at the student's home school and the student cannot access a VSL Centre class because of distance

  • the student is not attending school but is travelling interstate or overseas for the year

  • the student is not attending their home school due to ill health

  • the student is undergoing school disciplinary procedures

  • the principal of the student's home school endorses the enrolment

  • no more than four students per school may be enrolled in a primary level distance education language programthe student must also continue to participate in their home school's language program; or

  • the student is approved for home schooling

  • the student must also continue to participate in their home school's language program; or

  • the student is approved for home schooling

Community Language Schools (CLS)

Community language schools (CLS) are community-based, not-for-profit organisations that provide language programs in over 40 languages to school aged children on weekends or after school.
