English language schools and centres and regional English language programs

Metropolitan ELS and ELC

There are eight English language schools and centres in the Melbourne metropolitan area.

The four stand-alone English language schools (ELS) cater for both primary and secondary students up to the equivalent of Year 10. Some English language schools also have campuses off site.

The four English language centres (ELC) are attached to mainstream secondary schools. All English language centres cater for secondary students in Years 7–10.

Students who meet the eligibility criteria can attend an English language school, campus or centre for between two to four terms. The small class sizes and high number of contact hours enable qualified EAL teachers to deliver an intensive English language program tailored to the differing needs of students. This helps them to adapt as quickly as possible to the Australian education system and society. EAL is taught through the content of all learning areas.

The Virtual EAL New Arrivals Program provides remote support for newly arrived EAL students in rural schools using virtual conferencing and digital tools. For more information, see Virtual EAL New Arrivals Program.
