An Australian-first multi-site academy of teaching and leadership excellence will be built in Victoria.
The Victorian Government has announced a $148.2 million investment to establish the Victorian Academy of Teaching and Leadership, to deliver advanced professional learning for high-performing teachers in government, Catholic and independent schools.
The Victorian Academy of Teaching and Leadership will build on the strong foundations of the existing Bastow Institute of Educational Leadership with a new focus on professional learning for Victoria’s highly skilled teachers.
The academy will begin operations and the delivery of new programs from January 2022.
About the academy
The Victorian Academy of Teaching and Leadership will be based in a purpose-designed CBD site, and across seven regional sites — ensuring rural and regional teachers are able to access high-quality professional development. The existing Bastow site in North Melbourne will complement these sites.
The regional centres will be located in:
The CBD location is expected to be open early next year and the Geelong site by mid-2022 – with the rest of the sites operating by the end of 2022.
Teachers will have access to the latest research in the science of learning, giving them the skills to ensure their students grow as creative and critical thinkers.
Teachers will also be able to learn from one another — with a focus on sharing best practice, ideas, experience and resources. They will then lend their expertise and knowledge with their own school communities, ensuring every classroom and every child benefit from the government investment.
Up to 500 teachers each year will undertake the academy’s flagship one-year Teaching Excellence Program (TEP).
This program will deepen teaching excellence for Victoria’s highly skilled teachers, advancing their professional expertise through access to the latest research in the science of learning and discipline-based pedagogical content knowledge.
The TEP will:
enable the development of high-quality teaching in the discipline areas
research, develop, explore and test new and emerging professional practice
provide access for highly skilled teachers across the state and sectors from all subject areas and schools.
Existing and additional leadership programs will focus on consistently developing emerging leaders and aspiring principals.
