Develop your skills through the Effective Mentoring Program

The Effective Mentoring Program (EMP) aims to equip teachers with the knowledge and skills to mentor graduate teachers, instil pride in teaching and a desire to continue on in the profession with passion. Mentoring ensures graduate teachers are provided with the support they need in the classroom and out of it, to build their professional practice quickly.

The program will be implemented from the start of Term 1 in 2019, and consists of a two-day program. The two days of training are not consecutive, with day one taking place between February and July 2019 and day two between May and September 2019.

Experienced mentor teachers who have previously completed the EMP prior to 2016 are also eligible to attend a 'refresher' one-day program to update their knowledge and skills. The EMP is available to all Government, Catholic and Independent school teachers and Early Childhood teachers.

Guide your development with the Mentoring capability framework

A revised version of the Mentoring Capability Framework (MCF) is now available for all teachers and school to help guide the mentoring relationship.

Using the MCF as a guide, mentor teachers support graduate teachers to plan, implement and evaluate their on-going practice and collaborate with experience teachers.

The MCF sets out expectations and behaviours for mentees, mentors and schools in the six domains, including:

  • Professional culture and context
  • Teaching and learning
  • Professional identity
  • Communication and interpersonal skills
  • Collaborative partnerships
  • Professional generosity and empathy
