Koorie English free online learning returns in May

Build up the skills to help strengthen literacy outcomes for Koorie English speakers

The Department is delivering more free Koorie English online learning programs sessions from May.

Koorie English is a dialect spoken by many Aboriginal students and families across Victoria. It is comprised of linguistic, socio cultural and non-verbal features that many teachers may not recognise, which can impact on student engagement and wellbeing.

Following the success of previous free sessions delivered in February and March, participants will explore the linguistic elements of Koorie English as a dialect, its significance in the cultural safety of Koorie learners and its relationship with academic achievement.

Online learning program

Feedback from the Koorie English online learning sessions held in February and March was overwhelmingly positive.

From practical strategies to use in the classroom to changing how teachers interact with students, teachers said they found the course relevant and helpful.

The program has been expanded and will deliver more online sessions across three modules in May, July and August, to help teachers understand Koorie English and its relationship with student achievement.

The program will cover:

  • Module 1: What is Koorie English?
  • Module 2: Language and Wellbeing (Engagement)
  • Module 3: Koorie English and Literacy in the Classroom

The opening module explores the linguistic, socio-cultural and non-verbal aspects of Koorie English, while modules two and three are focused on the classroom.

The training includes engagement in collaborative reflective practice, videos, activities and breakout rooms for discussion.
