Preventing burns and scalds

Most scalds happen in the kitchen. Although you may want or need to keep your baby with you, it’s best to keep them physically some distance away from kitchen activities that could be dangerous.

  • Position the highchair or pram away from stoves and hot water. Watch out for little hands grabbing your cup .
  • The temperature of hot water delivered to basins, baths and showers should not exceed 50°C. Run cool water through the tap at the end to avoid accidental burns.
  • Use fixed fire screens or heater guards on open fires and heaters.
  • For burn or scald injuries, hold injured area under cool, running water for 20 minutes. Seek medical attention.
