CPR for babies

If your baby is unconscious:

  1. Place them on their back.
  2. Open their mouth to check for airway blockages such as food, vomit etc.
  3. If there is a blockage, try to clear it using your little finger.
  4. Check to see if they are breathing: look for the rise and fall of their chest or feel their breath on your cheek.
  5. Do not shake the baby.

If your baby is breathing, place them stomach down along your arm (recovery position) and pat their back firmly. Phone 000. Keep an eye out for changes in your baby’s breathing and responses.

If your baby is not breathing or responding, phone 000 immediately and follow the operator’s instructions. It’s helpful to be familiar with first aid procedures in case of an emergency. An idea is to keep emergency phone numbers easily accessible on the fridge.
