Babies have little tummies so they need milk every couple of hours in the first few weeks. They will also probably need to wake during the night for a cuddle and a feed.
Your baby's hunger
It is good to feed your baby when they seem hungry. It is expected that your baby will be hungry every 2-4 hours during the day and the night.
It’s important to feed your baby whenever they want to be fed, and not let the clock dictate when it’s time. Babies might feed because they’re hungry, or want comfort because they’re tired or upset.
If you're breastfeeding
If you're breastfeeding, you can increase how often you offer your breast or the length of each feed, if they still seem hungry.
By feeding your baby often, your body will continue to make enough breast milk to meet your baby’s needs and build up your milk supply.
If you’re not with your baby, it’s important to express your milk at the times you would usually feed – this helps maintain your milk supply.
