Workers' compensation and the Return to Work Coordinator role
School Principals, department managers and/or their delegate must appoint a return to work coordinator (RTW Coordinator) to assist workers, where safe and practicable, to remain at work while they recover from an injury or to return to work as soon as possible post injury.
Key responsibilities of the RTW Coordinator include liaising with the worker, their manager or supervisor and the worker's health care providers to support their recovery and return to work, and monitoring the progress of a worker's recovery.
RTW Coordinators must have an appropriate level of seniority and be competent to assist the principal/department manager and/or their delegate to meet the department's return to work obligations.
The principal/department manager and/or their delegate must also ensure the RTW Coordinator receives appropriate training to support them in their role (for example, by attending the WorkSafe accredited two day RTW Coordinator Roles and Responsibilities Training, and/or the training available from the department's workers compensation agent, Gallagher Bassett).
Principal/department manager and/or their delegates should consider who is the most appropriate person to be a RTW Coordinator in each case. Where the RTW Coordinator has a conflict of interest with a particular WorkCover claim, a different RTW Coordinator should be appointed to manage that claim.
The department hosts training sessions for RTW Coordinators and for other people who are responsible for the administration of workers' compensation, which is facilitated by our WorkCover insurance agent, Gallagher Bassett. Further information about those training sessions is available here.
