The Department acknowledges that the giving of blood is a valuable community service and supports employees participating in blood donation programs.
Teaching Service employees may be given permission by their principal/manager to be absent from duty to donate blood. Wherever possible it is expected that school based employees will arrange their absence at a time when students are not in attendance or at a time that suits the operations and needs of the school. This includes accessing mobile Red Cross services when they are in the local area. The principal/manager may require proof of attendance.
Public Service employees may be granted leave with pay to visit the Red Cross Blood Bank as a donor once every twelve weeks, provided that the operations of the employee's work unit are not unduly affected.
