Overview
The following information is generic in nature and is provided for assistance only. Employees should seek appropriate financial advice before recording a SMSF on the payroll.
An employee may set up a Self-managed Superannuation Fund (SMSF) to which the Department may make Superannuation Guarantee (SG) payments.
A SMSF is created directly on eduPay, which, following review of the entry by the People Systems and Services team, the fund will be created, and the employee enrolled into their SMSF from the next available pay period. Follow the help guide, Enter or Update Superannuation Details below for quick and easy creation of your fund.
In order to make SG payments to the SMSF, the fund must be a complying superannuation fund and it must remain compliant and registered with the Australian Taxation Office (ATO).
Where a SMSF is no longer complying as identified on the ATO SuperFund Lookup website, the Department cannot make SG payments to the fund. In these circumstances, in order to meet our superannuation legislative requirements, the employee may be enrolled into the department default fund - Aware Super - VicSuper FutureSaver, however every attempt and opportunity will be provided for the employee to allowing sufficient time for the fund to be issued a compliant status before enrolment into VicSuper FutureSaver occurs.
Compliance information can be determined by entering the SMSF's Australian Business Number (ABN) to the Super fund Lookup website below.
Obtaining an Electronic Service Address
As part of managing your SMSF, the ATO requires all SMSF trustees to register their fund with a SMSF messaging provider to obtain an electronic service address (ESA). The ESA is required to receive both electronic messages and payment details when employers make superannuation contributions using SuperStream.
The ESA is included with your superannuation details on eduPay to enable the payment of superannuation contributions to your SMSF. The ESA provider will then pass on the information to the contact details recorded for your SMSF.
The Australian Taxation Office has published a register of SMSF messaging providers. Click the link below to access and select a messaging provider.
Select from the available providers on the ATO webpage and register your fund. You should seek advice from your Financial Planner or Accountant if you have any questions.
On completion of your registration with a SMSF messaging provider you will receive documentation acknowledging your registration and an ESA. This ESA is recorded on eduPay.
