Victorian Early Years Awards shine a light on Debney Meadows Primary school

Debney Meadows Primary school has been celebrated for its Oral Language Headstart program, which is helping our youngest children find their voice.

Receiving the Improving Access and Participation in Early Learning Award at the 2018 Victorian Early Years Awards, the program aims to improve oral language and social skills for early learners.

The primary school, which also includes a kindergarten, caters for a community with high rates of English as an Additional Language, trauma, refugee experience and parental illiteracy.

To address these issues, the school created an oral language program and activity centers for their littlest learners. The program was designed to support oral language development and used simple text to start conversations and learn new words.

The program has been a huge success, with 100 per cent of students showing improvement and of these 42.4 per cent showing significant improvement in their oral language and social skills.
