Early childhood Free TAFE courses are now underway

More learners across Victoria will be able to start a rewarding career in early childhood education and care, thanks to Free TAFE.

As a growing and dynamic sector, early childhood offers plenty of career opportunities.

The roll-out of funded universal Three-Year-Old Kindergarten means the creation of more than 6000 new early childhood education jobs, including 4000 teachers and 2000 educators by 2029.

Free TAFE reduces financial barriers associated with training, so more people interested in pursuing this career path can get the skills and qualifications they need to start their career in the early childhood sector.

Last year, more than 39,700 students commenced in Free TAFE courses. Highlighting the success of the initiative in attracting people to training, from January to December last year, there was an 88 per cent increase in commencements compared with the same courses in 2018.

From 2020, there are even more options for students wanting to study a vocational qualification in early childhood education.

Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care and Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care courses have been added to the Free TAFE course list, giving eligible students the opportunity to study and gain a qualification tuition-fee free.

The Certificate III covers the fundamentals of childhood development and caring for children, including effective interaction and communication, nutrition and first aid. The Diploma of Early Childhood Education will give students the skills to provide activities and care to children, with an emphasis on play-based learning.

Adding these courses to the Free TAFE list will create more qualified early childhood educators throughout Victoria, and give more people the opportunity to begin a rewarding career educating and caring for Victoria's children.

Once you have qualified as an educator, you can upskill to become an early childhood teacher by completing a degree qualification in the future. There are scholarships available to support you to study your degree, and you can apply for this financial support online at any time.

This year's addition of early childhood qualifications to the Free TAFE course list will help to ensure that all Victorian children continue to have access to high-quality learning delivered by qualified early childhood educators as the sector continues to grow.
