The Department of Education and Training (DET) alongside the Department of Premier and Cabinet (DPC) are providing funding via grants through the Victorian African Communities Action Plan Initiative (VACAP) for community organisations to deliver Homework Club activities for young people of African heritage enrolled in Victorian schools.
The initiative seeks to offer the opportunity for new, innovative approaches where community members and schools are working collaboratively to maximise the engagement of young people in education.
The funding is available for community organisations working in partnership with school communities to deliver homework clubs, after school activities and parent engagement activities. Up to $125,000 per organisation is available.
The objectives of the program are to:
- ensure African young people and their families and carers are provided with a safe, inclusive and culturally appropriate environment to interact and engage
- build and nurture positive relationships between community organisations, schools, parents, carers and African young people
- assist with homework – literacy, numeracy and communication skills, and other relevant activities including parent engagement.
