TAFE helped Robyn, a mum of four, re-enter the workforce to pursue a career in mental health.
'I was inspired to study as I wanted a qualification in my chosen field after being a stay at home Mum for 22 years,' Robyn says.
'I feel more confident in applying for roles now with the qualifications behind me, and saw it as an opportunity to further my career development.'
Robyn went to TAFE at Maroondah Federation Estate and studied a Certificate IV Mental Health Peer Work, leading to her career as a Peer Support worker. She loved the learning environment and felt that it offered a good work life balance.
'The experience of learning as an adult was different but rewarding, and it was helpful knowing that our assessments could be resubmitted if needed,' Robyn says.
'I feel that the length of the course was a perfect fit for me to have a good work life balance.'
Robyn says the skills she developed in the course have helped her in her job.
'Since completing the course, I gained a deeper understanding of what my role requirements are and the different types of roles in the peer workforce.'
Robyn really enjoys being a peer support worker. Using her own lived experiences and passion for supporting others, Robyn finds her job very rewarding.
'I've enjoyed supporting people during some of their most challenging moments and sharing their experiences both individually and in a group setting,' Robyn says.
'I do outreach support for people facing mental health challenges and help them to identify their strengths and values, and coach them around setting goals for them to be able to have a good life and find their path to recovery.'
In the future, Robyn would like to complete a Diploma in Community Services and believes doing a TAFE course is a great option.
