Matthew builds a career with TAFE

A TAFE apprenticeship helped Matthew make a career change to a rewarding job, volunteer overseas and carry on a family legacy.

Matthew was working as an auditor, but his childhood dream was to work alongside his father in the family building business. At age 28, Matthew decided to pursue his dream and enrolled in an apprenticeship at Box Hill Institute.

Matthew says completing a Certificate III in Carpentry at Box Hill Institute gave him access to experienced industry teachers and the opportunity to complete on-site learning, which were key to his successful transition from office work to learning a trade.

'TAFE was the perfect pathway for me to gain the skills for the job I now wanted to do,' Matthew says.

'I really enjoy standing back at the end of a job and being proud of what I've built.'

Matthew says Box Hill Institute of TAFE was convenient because it gave him the opportunity to learn onsite.

'Some subjects I could do at TAFE and other subjects I was able to do onsite, which made it easier on my employer as well because they could have me working more than paying me to go to TAFE,' Matthew says.

Where TAFE can take you

As well working in a job he loves, Matthew took his building skills to volunteer in the Philippines and Kenya, an experience he says he's 'really proud of.'

''TAFE presents you with a lot of opportunities,' Matthew says.

'If I hadn't learnt the skills, I wouldn't have had the confidence to go over and do that.'

A 2017 Victorian Apprentice of the Year finalist, Matthew says he loves helping others to see training pathways as viable and positive career options.

His also has his sights set on growing the family business.

'Dad was pretty happy when I told him I was going to be a builder,' Matthew says. 'Now he can share his knowledge with me and we can work together to expand the family business.'

'TAFE made all of that possible.'
