The centre is an important part of our commitment to languages education, multicultural and social cohesion policy initiatives.
The Languages and Multicultural Education Resource Centre (LMERC) will this month celebrate 30 years of supporting students, teachers and schools.
LMERC, which is based in Carlton, is a dedicated resource centre for Victorian teachers from all sectors and at all levels, early childhood to adult.
A team of three staff ensure that the collection of more than 30,000 resources is available to educators across the state.
LMERC resources are borrowed by teachers for students to use at school and, in some cases, to share with families. Resources include bilingual picture dictionaries and picture books, audio or digital audio pens, and links to online resources such as translated information about starting school and school routines.
'The best part of working at LMERC is the diversity of educators using the library and the variety of requests we receive,' says LMERC Librarian Jenny.
'The staff, educators and stakeholders who use the collection form a kind of community where knowledge and information about resources is shared.'
Education Support Officer Barney from Wilandra Rise Primary School in Clyde North was full of praise for LMERC's work.
When Wilandra Rise welcomed a Russian-speaking student, resources from LMERC were crucial in helping her and her family to settle in to their new school community.
'They provided extremely useful and extremely practical resources', said Barney.
'Having those resources showed the parents that we were respecting their culture and their language.
'For that child, LMERC had a profound impact.'
Teachers from all Victorian school sectors and community language schools, staff and students from tertiary education faculties, and Victorian education authority staff are all eligible for LMERC membership.
