Children's Week event information
Arapiles Community Theatre
In our changing world, some species have been lost but others are adapting to new environments.
The Magnetica project allows young people to explore where they live and reflect on their relationship with some of the other creatures that inhabit the Earth.
Inspired by the award winning book Mechanica by Lance Balchin, workshop participants will develop their own creatures for the new world. But these creatures are special. They require a metallic environment in which to exist.
After inventing creatures consisting of organic and non-organic materials, workshop participants will construct articulating puppets made from magnetic sheets and rivets. The creatures will appear in surprising places - a fridge door, a metal railing or on a corrugated fence.
After appearing in their original environments during Children's Week, the creatures will migrate to the Natimuk Skate Park where they will delight and inform a whole new audience during the Nati Finj Biennale Festival.
Workshop participants will also document the species they have invented, by writing about their relationships, their life cycles and how they have adapted to a world with more humans and less resources.
