About Ovens Muray
Ovens Murray is as diverse in lifestyle options as it is in topography, offering the bustle of major regional cities, the charm of historic towns, and breathtaking vistas of an ever-changing landscape.
Bordering the Murray River to the north and having unique access to Victoria's High Country and four Alpine resorts, the Ovens Murray is best known for its great lifestyle advantages and thriving nature-based tourism.
Visitors flock to the area year-round to experience the lakes, rivers, mountains, festivals, and exceptional food and wine - the High Country alone attracts more than three million tourists each year.
Cycling, bush walking, snow sports, boating, fishing and horse riding (think Man from Snowy River), this area has it all.
With Mt Hotham, Falls Creek, Mt Buller and Lake Mountain providing four-season destinations and the mighty Murray River playing the perfect host for all water-based recreation, as a local, it’s all right at your doorstep.
Growth and opportunity
Ovens Murray includes the municipalities of Alpine Shire, Benalla Rural City, Indigo Shire, Mansfield Shire, Towong Shire, Wangaratta Rural City, and Wodonga City.
With just two sets of traffic lights, warm and welcoming locals and plenty of activities for people of all ages, Benalla offers a relaxed lifestyle.
Located on the Broken River and surrounded by rich, fertile farmlands, this beautiful city is known as ‘Rose City’ for its stunning public gardens.
The town features a world-class art gallery, aquatic and indoor recreation centres, performing arts and convention centre, quality wineries, fishing, golf and impressive street and silo art.
Benalla is also home to the State Gliding Centre, nationally significant Winton Wetlands, and the popular high-octane Winton Motor Raceway.
Situated the southern banks of the Murray River, Wodonga is the gateway to Victoria and New South Wales and one of the fastest growing towns in regional Victoria.
Wodonga’s population growth has steadily increased over the last 25 years, with much of this growth coming from overseas and surrounding municipalities on both sides of the river.
Fishing and water sports are popular activities, along with cycling, hiking, camping and sightseeing.
There is a thriving theatre scene, much of which is conducted in a cross-border fashion with the Wodonga’s twin NSW city of Albury, contemporary art galleries and live entertainment venues.
Gourmet food, cheese and wine are regional specialities, largely due to the area’s rich European heritage.
