Half year report 2016

The Victorian Training Market Report for 2016 half year has been prepared for key stakeholders in the Victorian Training System. This report draws, for the first time, on data compiled by the National Centre for Vocational Educati on Research (NCVER). Using NCVER data aligns DET's report to nationally published data, reducing duplication and the potential for confusion, and ensuring differences in trends between Victoria and other jurisdictions can be easily presented. The performance in 2016 (half year) is compared to that of the previous half year to provide a picture of changes and trends over time.

Full year report 2015

The Victorian Training Market Report is prepared by the Department of Education and Training, drawing on data submitted to the Department by training providers delivering government-subsidised training in Victoria.

The report compares 2015 training activity data with past years, to help provide a picture of changes and trends over time. These results will help inform the Victorian Government’s reform agenda to ensure a high quality vocational education and training (VET) system which will transform Victoria to the Education State, and produce job-ready Victorians for our current and future industry needs.​

Half year report 2015

Provided is a comparative overview of market changes relative to the same time in 2008 and 2010. The report also includes nine regional training profiles and 19 industry training profiles. These examine the responsiveness of the training market to structural shifts in the economy and labour requirements at the regional and industry level.

An industry view of Victorian skill needs in 2012

The ITAB Market Effectiveness Report is an annual report prepared by a consultant on behalf of the Higher Education and Skills Group (HESG) that provides industry advice on training market successes and failures, a labour market outlook and analysis of skills needs at industry level, including occupations in demand and critical skills shortages for each of the sixteen Industry Training Advisory Body (ITAB) industry groupings in Victoria.

The report forecasts that the Victorian economy will record modest employment growth of 0.8 per cent in 2012, the lowest growth in over a decade. Unemployment is forecast to rise to 5.6 per cent in 2012, up from 5.1 per cent in 2011.

Overall, ITABs listed 171 occupations as being in demand across the 16 industries. Of these, 78 were also categorised as experiencing a critical skill shortage. The major critical skill shortage areas include:

  • Traditional trades occupations in automotive, engineering, electro-technology and communications, hospitality, furnishing and textile, clothing and footwear;
  • Nursing, aged care, child protection, children’s services and community services;
  • Accounting, project managers, building surveyors and estimators, retail, hotel and restaurant managers;
  • Animal technicians, arborists, and agronomists;
  • Heavy vehicle drivers, bus and train drivers.
