Mining

Industry overview

The Mining industry involves the extraction of naturally occurring mineral solids, such as coal and ores; liquid minerals, such as crude petroleum; and gases, such as natural gas.

  • Mining provided $6.4 billion to Victoria's output in 2012-13, representing 2 per cent of the total.
  • The sector employs approximately 14,400 people, with expected growth of 18 per cent over the five years to 2017-18, with the largest growth in the Non-Metallic Mineral Mining and Quarrying sub-sector.

Training snapshot

  • Mining related courses accounted for 400 government subsidised enrolments in 2013. TAFE fee-for-service provision in the sector was around 150 enrolments.
  • Traineeships grew by 127 per cent to approximately 90 government subsidised enrolments between 2008 and 2013.
  • There were 8 training providers delivering government subsidised training related to the Mining sector in 2013. TAFEs provided 73 per cent of government subsidised enrolments in 2013. Private Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) share of government subsidised vocational training was 27 per cent of all enrolments in 2013.
