Shapes and the Microsoft Word drawing toolbar
Find out about shapes
Go to these websites and follow the instructions to make shapes:

Create a bookmark challenge
1. In Microsoft Word, show the Drawing Toolbar. View > Toolbars > Drawing. It usually goes to the bottom of the screen.
2. Experiment with the Drawing Toolbar. Click on a shape and draw it with your left mouse click.
3. Right click > Cut to remove the shapes, or click on the shape and press the Delete key.
4. Bookmark Challenge! Look at this example of a bookmark (Word - 28Kb). Make the bookmark - copy it exactly! Here are some steps to help you:
- click on the Rectangle shape and draw a long rectangle
- make the rectangle have short sides of 5 cm and long sides of 20 cm. So…
- right click on the border of the rectangle and go to
- format Autoshape >Size >Height: 20 cm Width: 5 cm OK
- right click on the border of the rectangle and left click on Add Text
- go to the inside top of the bookmark, delete NAME and type your name there in large letters
- do you remember the shapes you used to SPIN and EXTRUDE? Circle Square Triangle Rectangle Crescent Semi- Circle Trapezium Rhombus Cross Tee Pentagon
- use the GREEN CIRCLE on a shape to SPIN or ROTATE the shape
- use the 3-D STYLE tool to EXTRUDE your shape.
Create a bookmark TOUGHER challenge
Check this example of a bookmark (Word - 29Kb) and then create your own...
1. Create a bookmark 5cm wide and 20cm high.
2. In the Drawing Toolbar, use the down arrow of the Fill Color Tool (like a paint bucket) to fill your shape with a light colour.
3. Right click on the border of the rectangle and left click on Add Text.
4. Go to the inside top of the bookmark and type your name in large letters. Use a fancy font! Highlight your name and use the down arrow of the Font Color Tool (the “A”) to change the colour.
5. Do you remember the shapes you used to SPIN and EXTRUDE? Circle Square Triangle Rectangle Crescent Semi-Circle Trapezium Rhombus Cross Tee Pentagon
6. Use the Autoshapes, Rectangle and Oval tools to add shapes of your choice inside your bookmark.
7. Use the GREEN CIRCLE on a shape to SPIN or ROTATE the shape.
8. Use the 3-D STYLE tool to EXTRUDE your shape.
9. Change the shape’s colour by using the Fill Color Tool (like a paint bucket).
10. Near each shape write its name, and whether it is spun or extruded.
11. Print your bookmark, cut it out and use it!
Even TOUGHER
- Go into Autoshapes >More Autoshapes to find a semi-circle
- click in a shape, then left click on the down arrow of the Fill Color Tool (the bucket) >Click on Fill Effects and practise Gradient Texture Pattern
- left click inside a shape and left click on the down arrow of the Line Color Tool (the brush) and select a new colour for your lines
- make your lines thicker with the Line Style Tool (thick lines).

- ability to work through all the levels of difficulty.
Teacher notes
Teachers may use an interactive whiteboard to instruct students in the use of the Drawing Toolbar or use a data projector on a screen.
