Victorian Education Channel - Teacher
About the Channel
The Victorian Education Channel is a ‘portal’ website that links (or ‘channels’) to local and international educational web pages. It is a search engine which searches websites from Australia and all around the world.
Managed by the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (DEECD), it is a website that allows different users in schools to find resources suitable for their specific needs. Teachers have their own page from which they can search for online resources, and so do primary and secondary students.

Sites in the Channel
The Channel links to websites recommended by teachers of all year levels and from all curriculum areas. The Channel Team also research the latest local and international websites and review these sites for quality and safety before including them in the Channel.
Schools make particular use of the Channel with the one-stop shop for all teacher online resources on http://www.education.vic.gov.au/teacher Teachers can find all DEECD resources in one location and also search for sites which support planning and classroom activities involving the Internet.
So whether you are looking for a science lesson plan from the CSIRO, a Web Quest from the United States, educational online games from the BBC, statistics on AFL teams, or information on …, you can find it in the Channel.
And if what you want is not there, join the teachers who regularly recommend sites to make this enormous collaborative project relevant to your classroom.
Administrating the Channel
Any one can use the VEC anywhere in the world at anytime. How an individual school chooses to use the Channel is up to the Principal and staff at that school.
Some schools choose to restrict their students to the Victorian Education Channel as their only view of the Internet. This decision can be made and administered at the school itself.
Other schools choose to have one, some or all of their students restricted to the Victorian Education Channel. They choose this for various reasons:
- Some teachers feel it is a safer place for their students
- Some schools believe it is a means to reduce Internet costs (Some ISPs offer free downloads on Channel resources)
Many schools find the administration is virtually done for them with the moderation and filtering.
