VCAA Thinking Processes assessment maps - Levels 3-6 (http://vels.vcaa.vic.edu.au/assessment/maps/maps_domain/thinking/index.html) - A tool to help teachers assess student work using the Victorian Essential Learning Standards (VELS). They provide a range of annotated student work samples which can be used in conjunction with the progression points to help teachers make consistent and balanced judgments about student achievement.
Multi domain assessment - Sample task 2 – Healthy lifestyles - Focuses on LOTE, Thinking Processes at Level 4. Students select appropriate text or captions from a chart to produce a healthy lifestyle poster in the target LOTE. They then display their posters to the class and explain (in English) why they have chosen the particular text and images for the poster.
Multi domain assessment - Sample task 3 – Moving toy - Focuses on design, creativity and technology and thinking processes at Level 5. Students design and produce a mechanical figure that is moved by an electric motor and gear train.
Multi domain assessment - Sample task 4 – The story of me - Focuses on English and thinking processes at Level 5. Students create a digital story which explores a particular aspect of their lives.
Multi domain assessment - Sample task 5 – Antarctica exploration - Focuses on geography and thinking processes at Level 5. Students are asked to represent Australia at the United Nations Junior Assembly. They prepare and deliver a five-minute oral presentation that describes and explains the unique nature of Antarctica, identifies the threats that the area faces now and could face in the future, and makes recommendations for the continued responsible use of the area. The groups support their oral presentations with a digital presentation, a poster, a brochure or booklet.
Multi domain assessment - Sample task 6 - Your Pursuit - Focuses on history, thinking processes and communication at Level 5. The sample task is for students to create a Trivial Pursuit style of board game to test the local historical knowledge of Year 7 and 8 students. It follows each of the seven key principles of the design guidelines and provides a reflection on the task at every stage.
Multi domain assessment - Sample task 7 – Understanding weather - Focuses on mathematics and thinking processes at Level 5. Students produce a structured written report based on analysis and interpretation of data related to weather patterns in a number of selected cities.
Multi domain assessment - Sample task 8 – Toy with electrical circuit - Focuses on science, thinking processes and communication at Level 5. Students create a stuffed toy incorporating a working electric circuit which facilitates some kind of movement in the toy. They make an oral presentation about their toy to a peer group or class.
Multi domain assessment - Sample task 9 – Magazine interview - Focuses on English and thinking processes at Level 6. Students adopt the role of a journalist for a young adult magazine. They develop a list of questions for interviewing the main character in a novel or biography they have read. They then create the answers, based on their knowledge and understanding of the character, and write up their interview in the form of an article of approximately 600 words..
Multi domain assessment - Sample task 10 – Mind and body population and HIV/AIDS - Focuses on geography, thinking processes and interpersonal development at Level 6. Students investigate the impact of HIV and AIDS on the population in Sub-Saharan Africa. In small groups they collect information and data on their assigned Sub-Saharan African country. They go through each stage of De Bono’s Six Thinking Hats to evaluate and formulate strategies to help prevent the spread of HIV and make conclusions. They present the information electronically to the class.
