Digital learning in Science

australianscreen is developed in partnership with the National Film and Sound Archive (NFSA) by Curriculum Corporation through The Le@rning Federation. The site brings together material from the vast collections of the NFSA, the National Archives of Australia, the ABC, SBS, and AIATSIS in a unique collaboration. It represents over 1,300 Australian feature films, documentaries, television programs, newsreels, advertisements, short films, animations and home-movies produced over the last 100 years, with clips and curators’ and teachers’ notes. All material is made available with the permission of the copyright holders. The resource includes many clips on science and technology and environment.

BBC Learning - provides an extensive array of digital resources to support the Science classroom.

FUSE brings resources together in one place, so it is easier to find quality digital content. Sources include the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (DEECD) (e.g. Digilearn, Connect), Skool.com, The Learning Federation and Victoria’s Cultural Institutions.

The Global Teacher Project is a joint project between the Victorian Education Channel and The School Library Association of Victoria. The project is designed to provide teachers with a weblogging space which supports research in the use of this new technology. As a part of this weblogging space, there are a number of VELS based learning projects which include a Mad Hatter Challenge, a Share Bear diary, a bookclub and a blog.  Global Student is the student space connected to Global Teacher.

The Science Continuum

The Science Continuum P-10 is an evidence-based resource to assist teachers to support student progress through the VELS Standards. The Continuum provides teaching approaches that support all students to achieve a sound understanding of key scientific ideas. Linking expert practice and research, the Continuum explores students’ ideas based on their everyday experiences, the age-appropriate scientific view, critical teaching ideas and teaching activities.

 

12 new focus ideas have been added to the Science Continuum P-10! These ideas address issues of teaching electricity, the nature of science and Earth science, among others!

Sample Science

Sample Science P-6 is a unit planning resource for primary teachers. It provides engaging and challenging activities that encourage students to explore science ideas. Teachers can sample from these activities to develop units that support students to achieve the VELS Science standards.

PoLT – Classroom vignettes

The PoLT Online Professional Learning Resource contains a number of classroom activity snapshots (vignettes) which focus on particular stages of learning and explore the Principles in action within a science classroom.

Science Innovation in Victorian Schools

Ecolinc - a science and technology innovation centre located in Bacchus Marsh, provides innovative programs for P-12 students. Programs focus on sustainable environmental development practices. The web site lists details about its projects and programs, including booking information.

Gene Technology Access Centre (GTAC) - provides a wide range of programs in molecular and cell biology to enrich student learning, with particular reference to DNA science and applications in biotechnology. This web site contains online resources and information for teachers, booking information, and program details.

Victorian Space Science Education Centre (VSEEC) - promotes the learning of science by providing engaging, hands on activities for students and teachers. VSSEC is also part of a global network of Space Science Centres and Institutions and links between local and international business and industry. The web site provides an electronic newsletter CAPCOM and various other downloadable resources.

Primary Connections
Primary Connections is a curriculum and professional learning resource linking the teaching of science and literacy. Primary Connections provides curriculum units that support science teaching from Prep to Grade 6. Each unit describes outcomes, step-by-step lessons, equipment required, and links to additional resources, assessment tasks, background information, and resource sheets.

Scientists in Schools
Scientists in Schools promote science education in primary and secondary schools. The programs will help to engage and motivate students in their learning of science, and broaden awareness of the types and variety of exciting careers available in the sciences.

Biotechnology Online Secondary School Resource
The Biotechnology Online Secondary School Resource helps teachers and students to explore and understand the differing points of view on current practices and the ethical and moral questions that form a part of the present debate on biotechnology. It includes informational text, activities, and support notes for teachers.

Deep Space in the Classroom - an astronomy teaching resource available to all Australian high schools. This has been developed by Macquarie University under the DEEWR-supported ASISTM project "Bringing Deep Space into the Classroom", a 2007-08 pilot study on engaging school students in science using astronomy and access to the robotic, internet-controlled Faulkes Telescopes in Australia and Hawaii.

World Science Day

World Science Day 2012

World Education Games 2012 – World Science Day, 8 March 2012, is one of three events that make up the World Education Games. In 2011, more than 5.5 million students worldwide participated in the World Education Games.
