Science Education Websites

This section contains links to websites, resources and tools to help science teachers provide learning and teaching support for teachers. The information is categorised into the following science areas, and are further grouped into Primary, Secondary, or both Primary and Secondary.

General sciences

Secondary

Catalyst - interactive website focusing on stories featured on the ABC Catalyst program, from scientific breakthroughs, issues, and how scientists work in the field.

Nova - the Australian Academy of Science publishes this web site which examines topical science issues. The material is suitable for secondary students and teachers.

Primary and Secondary

Australian Antarctic Division - offers a range of information and educational resources about the Antarctic for teachers and the general public.

ABC Science - an excellent resource for both teachers and students covering science news, controversial topics, science information and more.

Big Science - ASI conducts the Australian Science Olympiad Programs and has the responsibility to ensure Australia's representation at the International Biology, Chemistry and Physics Olympiads and the Rio Tinto Big Science Competition. ASI also presents Rio Tinto Big Science Online, a free education website providing flexible and fun science activities that are ready for students and teachers to use in secondary classrooms.

Blood Buddies is a free on-line education resource produced by the Australian Red Cross Blood Services for students in Years 7-10.

Bureau of Meteorology - offers a wide range of educational resources including lesson plans, brochures and information about weather phenomena and availability of weather kits. If you live in regional or rural Australia, regional offices welcome school visits, subject to availability of staff and operational requirements.

Bright Sparcs - dedicated to Australian scientists who made contributions to world science, this site provides information about Australian women who have made a difference in often male-dominated professions.

Clean Up Australia – provides information on Clean Up Australia Day, environmental campaigns and resources.

CSIRO - offers science programs and resources for schools, special events around Australia and a range of at-home science for all ages.

CSIRO Science Education Centre (Victoria) - CSIRO is Australia's national science agency. The website provides information on a range of science related topics, school programs, educational events, and the Melbourne CSIRO Science Education Centre, which offers hands-on science programs for students and teachers. Program offered through the Strategic Partnerships Program: Teacher and student research scheme.

EPA Victoria School Resources - offers a range of free resources to support schools in the teaching and learning about environmental issues.

International Polar Year - is a large scientific programme focused on the Arctic and the Antarctic from March 2007 to March 2009. The website describes the activities, and also provides advice how teachers can be involved.

Newton's Apple - this is an American family science program hosted by public television (the equivalent of Australia’s ABC). The web site describes scientific demonstrations and also provides science quizzes.

PBS Science - covers archaeology and anthropology, digital technology, earth and space, general science, inventions, life science, physics, and science mysteries. It provides beautiful graphics, interactive activities and comprehensive lesson plans.

Science Image - is an image library specialising in science and nature images. Images are readily downloadable.

The Exploratorium - from the world renowned San Francisco Exploratorium, the site provides information for students, often supported with animations and interactive activities.

The Mad Scientists Network - provides a global archive of recently asked questions and lists answers provided by correspondents from around the world. The Mad Scientists' Network also has a library with links to a wide range of science fields.

Victorian Landcare Centre - the Education section provides information about resource kits, education programs and self-guided tours that the centre offers. Staff at the centre can assist teachers to incorporate Landcare activities into the curriculum.

Biological sciences

Secondary

Australian Stem Cell Channel - supported by the Victorian Government, this site utilises interactive media to describe diseases that are targets for stem cell research and offers footage of microscopic procedures such as somatic cell nuclear transfer and cell differentiation and verbal explanations of the basic concepts describing what stem cells are and their potential.

Science Animations: Movies and Interactive Tutorial Links – this resource provides a collection of biology and biochemistry animations from a range of United States universities.

Primary and Secondary

Gould League of Victoria - offers a wide range of resources relating to the environment. These include programs, posters, books, videos and CD-ROMs. This web site contains information about its school programs, getting involved, partnering with Gould, and news.

Chemical sciences

Primary

chemistry.org - provides an extensive suite of chemical science activities and information suitable for primary students.

Kitchen Chemistry - provides interactive activities for both a virtual and physical kitchen. It challenges students to carry out activities such as the ‘cabbage juice indicator’ or the ‘penny polisher’, and to develop their own conclusions.

Earth sciences

Primary and Secondary

Earth Science Literacy Initiative – this short resource developed by the American Association for the Advancement of Science provides an overview of the big ideas in Earth Science.

Geoscience Australia (GA) - offers a wide range of downloadable education resources and offers publications, maps, models and education kits for sale.

Minerals Council of Australia - provides information about Australia's rich mineral resources and their uses. The web site includes primary and secondary resources including virtual tours and interactive explorations.

Visible Earth - this searchable directory from NASA contains many images of the Earth from space.

Volcano World - includes a list of currently active volcanos and an emergency eruption simulation game, plus other information resources and activities for students.

World-Wide Earthquake Locator - aims to provide up-to-date information and detailed dynamic maps of earthquakes across the world. This web site also includes a database of past earthquakes, an animation of the past month's earthquakes and statistical earthquake prediction.

Science, Optics & You! - contains activities and information about lenses, light and optics.

Primary and Secondary

Leonardo da Vinci - from the Museum of Science in Boston, this web site explores the life and inventions of Leonardo da Vinci, including the simple machines found in many of his designs.

Secrets of Lost Empires - explores the simple machines used by several ancient cultures in their building and construction works.

Skateboard Science - gives you the science behind those skating tricksters.

Hubble Telescope - contains news, information and education resources about this major project.

Imagine the Universe - this NASA site has extensive information about the universe, planets, stars and astronomical facts.

Kids @ NASA - provides activities for students to develop understanding of thermal imaging and plate tectonics.
