Primary Science Matters

Introduction

The Primary Science Matters Professional Learning Resource is designed for primary teachers and school leaders.  The underlying purpose of this resource is to support schools and teachers in making a difference to each student’s:

  • achievement in science
  • experience of learning science
  • capacity as a learner
  • growth as a scientifically literate citizen.

The Primary Science Matters resource includes a series of professional learning modules designed for delivery to groups of teachers. Each module details professional learning activities and provides supporting resources. The modules emphasise highly interactive professional learning and provide a range of hands-on opportunities for teachers to develop their practice.

Key areas of practice underpinning effective science teaching

The key areas of teacher practice explored in this resource are:

  • understanding how students learn science
  • teaching for understanding in science
  • understanding and teaching the nature of science
  • engaging students in contemporary science
  • planning the science curriculum
  • assessing understanding in science.

These areas of practice are explored with reference to contemporary research and best practice and are strongly linked to core DEECD Resources, including the Victorian Essential Learning Standards and the Science Continuum P-10.  Additional resources are linked or referenced within each module.

Overview and structure of the resource

The professional learning program was designed as three days of face to face workshops. The modules are presented in chronological order but may be sampled from as required.

The professional learning program is currently being delivered across regions – full module details and materials will be available from June.

Participant resources

Participants in the Term 2 professional learning program are encouraged to collaborate via the online tools and to provide feedback to the Department.
