Assessment

This section contains information, resources and tools to help teachers make a consistent and balanced assessment of student achievement.

VCAA Science Assessment Maps Levels 3–6

The VCAA Science assessment maps Levels 3–6 are a tool to help teachers assess student work using the Victorian Essential Learning Standards. They provide a range of annotated student work samples which can be used in conjunction with the progression points to help teachers make consistent and balanced judgments about student achievement.

Multi-domain Assessment

Sample Task 8: Toy with electric circuit – assesses the science, thinking processes and communication domains at Level 5.

DEEWR Science Education Assessment Resources (SEAR)

SEAR is a DEEWR (Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations) resource that provides a searchable database of assessment items. SEAR is free but requires registration.

A range of assessment items are covered in this resource. It is a particularly useful source of diagnostic assessments, as it provides rich interpretations of student responses and identifies implications for further teaching.

It should be noted that the items are linked to the DEEWR scientific literacy progress map which describes six levels of scientific literacy across P-12. The map and associated advice is also available on the site.

MCEEDYA National Assessment Program (NAP) – Science Literacy

The National Assessment Program was developed to enable teachers to compare the results of individuals and classes to the Year 6 national proficiency levels and standards. The tests may be used at a classroom level to diagnose student strengths and weaknesses, either individually or as a cohort; and help teachers to analyse the effectiveness of their teaching and learning strategies. The resource is not specifically linked to the Victorian Essential Learning Standards but can be used to generate a useful description of students’ scientific literacy.
