This module reviews the themes in the Teaching Secondary Mathematics resource and provides an opportunity to start planning a revitalisation of mathematics in school.

• Resources accessed through the Mathematics Domain page assist in ‘putting the learner at the centre’.  School revitalisation of mathematics can use these resources
• Assessment for learning, followed by targeted instruction, is a key to improving achievement. Resources are provided on the Mathematics Domain page
• Teaching is more effective if it is built on knowledge of student thinking
• School improvement can start with the seven principles of highly effective professional learning
• Begin planning by thinking about ‘who’ and ‘what’:
  • mathematical focus
  • pedagogical themes
  • assessment for learning
  • targeted teaching
• Then move to ‘how’ and ’when’
• The lotus diagram is a useful planning tool
• The Departmental curriculum planning guidelines in particular curriculum planning module 2 provide authoritative support for professional learning teams.
