The following Mathematics and numeracy-related web sites are grouped into DEECD resources and other resources. These links are a great resource for mathematics teachers with sites covering various aspects of mathematics teaching and numeracy.

 

DEECD resources

DigiLearn - is the new way teachers can access and download the Learning Federation’s learning objects and digital resources. Teachers are now able to search online by keyword or browse by Domain to discover hundreds of different digital learning resources.

Digilearn also hosts INTEL skool, a collection of over 200 learning objects and simulations for VELS Levels 4 to 6. Just click on the skool tab along the Digilearn menu bar to access these downloadable resources.

 

Teaching approaches

Teaching approaches (PDF - 55Kb) - This resource outlines Modelled, Shared and Guided teaching approaches. It is recommended that students, at different stages of their learning, experience each teaching approach depending on the topics covered and the support required for each.

 

PoLT – classroom vignettes

The PoLT Online Professional Learning Resource contains a number of classroom activity snapshots (vignettes) which focus on particular stages of learning and explore the Principles in action within a Mathematics classroom.

Other web sites and resources

Ask Dr Math - Frequently Asked Questions (http://mathforum.org/dr.math/faq) - Students can access the answers to frequently asked question about mathematics, ranging from topics like "What is Pascal's triangle?", "How do I name a polygon?" and "What is the order of operations?" Recommendation: This site provides students with a means of investigating important and interesting mathematics questions and encourages them to ask their own questions. Consider starting an ask DR MATHS session in your class, where students can post questions of interest to them and teachers or other students can provide the answers.

Australian Bureau of Statistics: CensusAtSchool

CensusAtSchool is an innovative student-centered online learning resource that aims to increase statistical literacy among Australian school students and integrate technology in the classroom. This link takes you to the CensusAtSchool data page, where you can use the random sampler to extract samples from a large nationwide database containing real, raw data about Australian students. Students can graph, compare, draw scatterplots, stem and leaf plots, and explore distribution and relationships in the data using spreadsheets or graphics calculators. Alternatively, use the range of prepared samples and information tables sourced from the CensusAtSchool database. Ready to use classroom activities based on raw, real data collected from students are also available on this site.

InterMath Project Website (http://intermath.coe.uga.edu) - Recommendation: A fabulous resource of ideas and activities for teaching fractions, decimals, patterns and relationships, and lots, lots more.

Mathematical Glossary for Middle Level Students (http://mathcentral.uregina.ca/RR/glossary/middle/glossaryab.html) - Various mathematics dictionaries may have different definitions. These definitions are designed to be meaningful to middle level mathematics students.

National Literacy and Numeracy Week - National Literacy and Numeracy week celebrates literacy and numeracy education as a part of everyday life, and recognises the role of parents in supporting their children’s learning. This link includes resources for Early Years Schooling (EYS) and Middle Years Schooling (MYS) initiatives, participating schools, awards, and information for parents.

Numeracy: Families Working It Out Together (http://www.dest.gov.au/sectors/school_education/publications_resources) - Publications provided on this DEST web site include three downloadable brochures designed to highlight the opportunities for numeracy learning experiences for families of early years, middle years and later years primary students.

UK Primary Framework (http://www.standards.dfes.gov.uk/primaryframeworks) - A United Kingdom web site, the Primary Framework for literacy and mathematics, supports and increases all children's access to excellent teaching, leading to exciting and successful learning.

Visual Fractions (http://www.visualfractions.com) - This is an interactive skill builder for fractions.
