Research

This section identifies current research in the area of mathematics education.

Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations - Numeracy Specific Publications - The Australian Government considers that numeracy is one of the cornerstones of all learning. Publications provided on this DEEWR web site include surveys, reports and papers on various Numeracy projects undertaken by states and territories, funded by the Australian Government.

Early Numeracy Research Project (ENRP) - this research project (1999-01) involved 35 trial schools in the development of a comprehensive framework for mathematical development by identifying points of growth. The site includes further information about the ENRP and provides a link to the Executive Summary, framework of growth points and case studies.

Middle Years Numeracy Research Project (MYNRP) - this research project (1999 – 2000) was commissioned to inform the development of a strategic and coordinated approach for schools about the teaching and learning of numeracy for students in Years 5-9, to trial and evaluate the proposed approaches in selected Victorian schools and to document what works and does not work in numeracy teaching including those students who fall behind. The site provides a link to download the Final Report.

Performance of Australian School Students in International Studies in Mathematics - Australia participates on an ongoing basis in two international assessments that examine the mathematical skills and understanding of students. These are the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) and the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS). Participation in these studies enables us to benchmark the performance of Australian students against students in other countries, to assess Australian students’ relative strengths and weaknesses and to monitor our achievement levels over time.

Research eLert - Numeracy in practice: teaching, learning and using mathematics (PDF - 127Kb) - This report is based on a focused literature search undertaken to identify local and international research in the area of numeracy learning and teaching.

Research eLert - Numeracy programs in schools (PDF - 111Kb) – Case studies and accounts from teachers and schools trialling innovative ‘next’ practices related to numeracy.

Researching Numeracy Teaching Approaches in Primary Schools - this Commonwealth funded project through DEEWR researched numeracy teaching practices in order to identify effective classroom teaching approaches in mathematics from Prep to Year 6. Provides information about the report, the Executive Summary and links to download the report.
