Victorian Literacy and Numeracy Statement

The Victorian Literacy and Numeracy Statement (PDF - 3.7Mb) was released on 14 December 2009.  The Statement describes Victoria’s current approach to literacy and numeracy education.  It clearly outlines a set of expectations about the roles and responsibilities of Victorian teachers and school leaders in supporting high quality literacy and numeracy education.  The Statement also describes the strategies and initiatives provided by the system to support teachers and school leaders to carry out these roles and responsibilities.  It is expected that this document will be a valuable reference and resource for school teachers, school leaders, regional network leaders and other regional personnel.

The Key Characteristics of Effective Numeracy Teaching P-6 (PDF - 1.0Mb) – specifies the nature of quality differentiated classroom teaching for all students in Years Prep to 6.  These characteristics were informed by research and developed through consultation with classroom practitioners, mathematics experts, coaches and regional personnel.  This document links to the Victorian Essential Learning Standards and relevant online numeracy learning and teaching resources.

The Key Characteristics of Effective Numeracy Teaching 7 - 10 (PDF - 902Kb) – specifies the nature of quality differentiated classroom teaching for students in Years 7 to 10. These characteristics were informed by research and developed through consultation with classroom practitioners, mathematics experts, coaches and regional personnel. This document links to the Victorian Essential Learning Standards and relevant online numeracy learning and teaching resources.

Energising Science and Mathematics Education in Victoria is a suite of actions which, together, are designed to interest more students in mathematics and science education, lift their achievements in mathematics and science and assist their teachers to provide engaging, innovative learning experiences in mathematics and science. The actions, which build on current initiatives, focus on

  • improving infrastructure
  • support strategic partnerships
  • build workforce capacity, and
  • expand resources to support a contemporary curriculum.
