This section contains information, resources and tools to help teachers make a consistent and balanced assessment of student achievement.
Fractions and Decimals Online Interview - Allow teachers to better understand their students’ knowledge, skills and behaviours with regard to fractions and decimals, a known ‘hot spot’ of difficulty for many students.
Mathematics Online Interview - Consists of appropriate hands-on assessment tasks where students demonstrate mathematical understanding and preferred strategies for solving increasingly complex tasks.
The Scaffolding Numeracy in the Middle Years (SNMY) project investigated a new assessment-guided approach to improving student numeracy outcomes in Years 4 to 8. In particular, the project identified and refined a Learning and Assessment Framework for the development of multiplicative thinking in the middle years using rich assessment tasks. This link also provides the Assessment materials, the Learning and Assessment Framework, Learning Plans, Authentic tasks and the research findings.
Assessment for Common Misunderstandings - These assessment tools are based on a series of highly focussed, research-based Probe Tasks and the Probe Task Manual also includes a number of additional tasks and resources which have been organised to address common misunderstandings.
VCAA Mathematics assessment maps (http://vels.vcaa.vic.edu.au/assessment/maps/maps_domain/maths) - A tool to help teachers assess student work using the Victorian Essential Learning Standards (VELS). They provide a range of annotated student work samples which can be used in conjunction with the progression points to help teachers make consistent, on-balance judgments about student achievement.
Multi domain assessment: Sample task 7 – Understanding weather - This multi domain task focuses on Mathematics and Thinking Processes at Level 5. This sample task is for students to produce a structured written report based on analysis and interpretation of data related to weather patterns in a number of selected cities.
