This section links to websites, online resources and tools that provide learning and teaching support for teachers.

A Studies of Asia program embeds the study of history, geography, literature, popular culture and traditional arts of the countries of Asia within the domains of Humanities, English and The Arts. Such learnings are imperative to prepare students to live, learn and work in the 21st century.

Digilearn (secure site, Edumail password required) – A portal for accessing a wide range of Digital Learning Resources, including 'The Learning Federation' Learning Objects. Teachers are able to search online by keyword or browse by domain. (Access is available from within your school and outside of school if you login with your PIN number and your Edumail password).

Languages and Multicultural Resource Centre (LMERC) – A specialist support centre that provides resources and advice for teachers in the areas of LOTE,ESL, human rights and multicultural education. Teachers in all Victorian schools can borrow (at no cost) reference materials and journals, posters, culturally inclusive resources, materials in over 40 languages and multimedia resources.

Languages Online – A free multimedia website that contains downloadable game ‘templates’ that enable students and teachers to create interactive games, in any language, using their own text, pictures and voice recordings. The site also contains over 800 ready-made interactive tasks and worksheets for students learning French, German, Indonesian or Italian.

Languages Kits (Word - 219Kb) – Language-related activities for a number of locations such as the Royal Botanic Gardens (French, German, Indonesian) and Sovereign Hill Museum, Ballarat (Chinese). They include assessment tasks.

Museum Victoria (http://museumvictoria.com.au) – Links to the Immigration Museum, Melbourne Museum and Scienceworks. These institutions have education officers and often hold exhibits and displays with accompanying resources and activities that can used within a LOTE learning context.

Promotion and advocacy – A range of resources to assist teachers to promote the benefits of language learning in schools. The resources can be used with students, parents and the community.

Case studies

Bayswater South Primary School (PDF - 184Kb) – Documents the total immersion language program at Bayswater South.

Heathmont East Primary School (PDF - 195Kb) – Documents the school’s integrated approach to their Japanese program, which makes links where possible with what the children are studying with their class teacher.

Linking LOTE to the Early Years (PDF - 2.6Mb) – This booklet documents research that demonstrates the benefits in developing literacy in more than one language. It also presents case studies of schools which have established effective links between teaching languages other than English (LOTE) and early literacy development in English.

Great Wall of China

The Great Wall of China units below provide learning opportunities for students in the domains of LOTE – Chinese, Interpersonal Development, Communication and Thinking Processes.

Students work individually as well as cooperatively in teams to:

  • explore Chinese ancient civilisation and its impact on their life in the 21st century
  • complete an in-depth study of the language related to specific knowledge
  • look at the core communication skills of listening, reading and viewing, speaking and writing in Chinese
  • obtain cross-cultural and intercultural understandings that are all defined as the key elements of communicative competence.
