Digital learning in Health and Physical Education

CensusAtSchool Australia logo

CensusAtSchool - is an online questionnaire and analysis resource for students in Years 5–12 in Australian schools. Having access to real, contextualised data provides students with the opportunity to make meaningful use of statistics across a wide range of curriculum contexts. CensusAtSchool is voluntary and is provided strictly for educational purposes only.

Participating in the questionnaire is free and voluntary. The questionnaire has thirty questions about students’ lifestyles, preferences and opinions and takes around twenty minutes to complete. It provides a simple and innovative way for students to have hands-on experience with data collection and usage.

By taking part in the 2012 Questionnaire, students will contribute to Australia’s premier database of statistical information about students.

The CensusAtSchool Questionnaire closes on 6 July 2012.

australianscreen - is developed in partnership with the National Film and Sound Archive (NFSA) by Curriculum Corporation through The Le@rning Federation. The site brings together material from the vast collections of the NFSA, the National Archives of Australia, the ABC, SBS, and AIATSIS in a unique collaboration. It represents over 1,300 Australian feature films, documentaries, television programs, newsreels, advertisements, short films, animations and home-movies produced over the last 100 years, with clips and curators’ and teachers’ notes. All material is made available with the permission of the copyright holders. The resource includes many clips on Sport and health, identity and culture.

FUSE brings resources together in one place, so it is easier to find quality digital content. Sources include the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (DEECD) (e.g. Digilearn, Connect), Skool.com, The Learning Federation and Victoria’s Cultural Institutions.

Health and Physical Education Standards in Practice in Victorian Primary and Secondary school

These documents provide examples of activities and tasks that reflect the achievement of a particular VELS standard or progression point. Each component of a standard is presented as an individual statement with examples which can be viewed as evidence of learning.

The examples may assist teachers to determine what students should know and be able to do as they exit each level be helpful in developing assessment tasks.

A resource for the teaching of Fundamental Motor Skills
This resource defines fundamental motor skills and links them to specific sports skill. It suggests methods of teaching FMS including teaching tips for specific fundamental motor skill development. Sample assessment tools are presented along with relevant practical activities for the application of each fundamental motor skill.

A resource for the teaching of Sport Education
This resource defines Sport Education and locates it within both the VELS and a comprehensive Physical Education program. It outlines the progression of Sport Education across P-10 and details a variety of teaching approaches. Methods of assessment of Sport Education are also included.

A resource to assist in Policy Development and Program Planning in Physical Education
This resource advocates for and provides assistance to schools in developing a Health, Physical and Sport Education policy. A sequential guide for program planning is provided, which includes audit tools, scope and sequence plans, sequence of learning plans, sample yearly plans and planning proformas.

A resource to assist in the development of a Physical Education program
This resource locates physical and sport education within the VELS curriculum by examining the domains, dimensions and standards within the Physical, Personal and Social Learning strand. It presents the key components of a physical education program and considers stages of learning and the manner in which strands form the key concept of a whole school planning document.

A resource for the teaching of Physical Activity and Fitness Education
This resource discusses the importance of physical activity and compares physical activity with physical education. It refers to the National Physical Activity Guidelines and locates physical activity and fitness within the Physical Education program and the VELS. It presents activities for increasing physical activity, advice on fitness testing and assessment strategies.

School Sport Victoria

School Sport Victoria (SSV) supports teachers in the delivery of quality physical and sport education programs. SSV is run by the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development’s (DEECD) School Sport Unit.

SSV supports the delivery of interschool sporting competitions to Victorian students through the programs of the Victorian Primary Schools Sports Association (VPSSA) and the Victorian Secondary Schools Sports Association (VSSSA).

Health and Physical Education related websites

Australian Institute of Sport into Your Classroom - an education program developed by the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) for Australian primary school teachers. The program contains 13 units designed to complement the VELS Health and Physical Education curriculum.  To obtain the resource, schools must register (free of charge) via AIS In The Classroom Registration

Australian Olympic Committee - is the official website of the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC). It provides information about the Olympic movement, its history, the Australian Teams and the Olympic Summer and Winter Games.

Australian Paralympic Committee – the official site for the Australian Paralympic Committee (APC). It provides information about the Paralympic movement, its history, the Australian Teams and the Paralympic Summer and Winter Games.

BKZone - the official Olympic Supporters site for the Australian Olympic Team and named after the famous Boxing Kangaroo (BK). The site is also a free education resource produced by the AOC for use by teachers and students.

Blood Buddies is a free on-line education resource produced by the Australian Red Cross Blood Services for students in Years 7-10.

Food Safety Training – This is an online food safety learning program that is available to better inform food handlers and all Victorians about how to handle food safely. This is a useful resource for teachers of Home Economics, Food Technology and Kitchen Garden Programs and people who work or volunteer in school canteens or anyone involved in food handling in a school environment. This is a free resource and has been developed by the Department of Health's Food Safety and Regulation Unit.

Go for your life - a Victorian Government initiative which aims to promote healthy eating and increase levels of physical activity. This web site provides a comprehensive online collection of information to support a statewide, whole of government initiative to improve the social awareness, health and activity levels of all Victorians.

Kids ‘Go for your life’ - This is a program for primary schools that is based on six key messages that make healthy eating and physical activity a fun and engaging learning experience for children.

Other ‘Go for your life’ initiatives that relate to schools:

The Invisible Illness website is about children and young people with chronic conditions. It provides information for the school community about the impact of these illnesses on students' lives and educational performance. It offers strategies to assist all parties.

Pierre De Coubertin Award - in 1997 this was introduced into Victorian secondary schools to recognise those students who seek to enhance their potential through participation in sport. The award emphasises participation and correct sporting attitudes in promoting an awareness of the Olympic Movement.

Sexuality Education - provides learning and teaching resources, teaching program development resources, professional learning opportunities, policy information, and student support information, for teachers, school leaders and parents in Victoria.

Sports Person in Schools (SPIS) - this program is funded by the Department of Education and coordinated by the Victorian Institute of Sport. This program facilitates visits by some of Australia's highest profile elite athletes to Victorian schools to promote the benefits of organised physical activity and healthy lifestyles for students. This web site also contains information about sports, athlete profiles, events and other community programs.
