A Studies of Asia program embeds the study of history, geography, literature, popular culture and traditional arts of the countries of Asia within the domains of Humanities, English and The Arts. Such learnings are imperative to prepare students to live, learn and work in the 21st century.

DigiLearn - the new way teachers can access and download The Learning Federation’s learning objects and digital resources. Teachers are now able to search online by keyword or browse by domain to discover hundreds of different digital learning resources.

Premier’s Reading Challenge - provides information about the way the Premier’s Reading Challenge operates and links to online registration and record keeping for individual students and schools.

National Literacy Numeracy Week - celebrates the achievements of schools and students in literacy and numeracy learning and teaching.

‘What’s in a name?’ (http://www.icsm.gov.au/icsm/cgna/lesson/teachers_home.html) – is a free educational resource comprising a video, activities and worksheets designed to explain the importance of place names; where they come from, what they stand for, and how crucial they are, but also how all Australians can become involved in the naming of places. Four English learning resources are provided.

Literacy

8 Areas of Literacy Knowledge (PDF - 34Kb) - the theoretical model on which the English Continuum P-10 is based and elaborates on the four resources model. This model covers a range of Literacy knowledge to build systematic and broad pedagogic practice to support student learning. This model includes metacognitive knowledge and relates to how to communicate effectively.

Learning & Teaching Sequences for Reading at Levels 1 - 6 - provides teacher resources based on the eight areas of literacy knowledge for the Reading dimension in both fiction and non-fiction texts.

Information and Communications Technology Domain

eLearning Support and Services provides support and resources for incorporating ICT and eLearning in innovative and challenging pedagogies. Also includes links to the eLearning Planning Guide, professional learning opportunities, and digital content creation.

Student diversity

Equity Guidelines - provides information to schools about supporting students from low socio-economic backgrounds.

English as a Second Language - provides information about a range of services and resources available to teachers and parents of ESL students.

Student Wellbeing - provides educators, parents and the community with policies and programs to enhance the health and resilience of young people in Victoria. This site also provides teachers with access to templates for catering for students requiring an Individual Learning Plan.

Intervention

Reading Recovery Program - a short-term, early literacy intervention, which helps students in Year 1 who have not yet established effective reading and writing processes. Students receive a series of daily, individual, thirty-minute Reading Recovery lessons from a specially trained teacher in addition to the regular classroom reading and writing program.

Making a Difference: A literacy development program for middle years students (http://www.curriculumpress.edu.au/main/goproduct/11695) - aimed at students in Years 5-9. It looks at developing students' literacy skills beyond the decoding aspect of reading, emphasising the need for these students to develop self-management strategies.

Making Intervention Work (PDF - 1.2Mb) - includes case studies examining approaches to literacy intervention by some of the top-performing Restart schools.

An Even Start (http://www.anevenstart.dest.gov.au) - an Australian Government initiative aimed at improving the literacy and numeracy skills of school students. This web site provides information for parents and carers, tutors, and schools about the program and who is eligible to receive assistance.
