VELS level 4 – Assessment to support literacy learning

A range of tools and techniques from the Assessment Professional Learning Modules and the assessment section of the student learning site can be adapted to strengthen assessment practices for literacy.

Peer conferencing on writing (PDF - 485Kb)
Use an electronic whiteboard to model the writing process with students, including strategies for planning, revising, proofreading and editing.

Peer Literature Circles self assessment (PDF - 56Kb)
A structured template for students to record responses to peer presentations during literature circles

Assessment tools

DIGA (PDF - 192Kb) (Describe, Interpret, Generalise, Apply) - a tool used by individual students or classes to reflect, write and create a deeper understanding of a topic, skill or process. View the teacher comments on this tool.

Learning Triangles (PDF - 197Kb) - a graphic organiser that allows students to interconnect their senses and emotions by reflecting and writing on their feelings as well as their knowledge. View the teacher comments on this tool.

KWHL (PDF - 209Kb) (Know? Want to know? How will I find out? What did I Learn?) - a tool used to inform teachers of the knowledge and interest level of their students at the start of a topic or unit and to help assess their learning at the completion. View the teacher comments on this tool.

PMI (PDF - 195Kb) - a tool, first developed by Edward De Bono, which encourages students to reflect, organise and record their ideas into what has worked, ( Plus) what hasn’t worked, ( Minus) and what is interesting ( I). View the teacher comments on this tool.

Pyramind (PDF - 210Kb) - a 3D graphic organiser that allows students to interconnect their knowledge under three major headings: Contrast (advantages and disadvantages) Reflection (why so?) and Prediction (what if?)

Webs (PDF - 192Kb) - a graphic organisation tool that allows students to organise and connect their ideas, research and questions on a topic, assignment or question. It is also called a mind map or concept map and is supportive of the planning phase of writing.

Progress Pass (PDF - 197Kb) - a small pass or ticket that students complete at the end of a lesson that allows them to quickly reflect on what they have achieved and where they need assistance and helps them to record and track their own progress through a learning task or activity.

Feedback Boxes (PDF - 233Kb) - used to guide students in their thinking about their independent work and to assist them to reflect and write on their individual performance.
