Teaching Strategies
During speaking and listening: Tuning in to ideas
The learning and teaching approach for speaking and listening is illustrated for students responding to the story The Little Red Hen.
Listen strategically to comprehend and respond
Students talk about the new ideas in sentences on the pages. Show the pictures on the pages. Ask, Who is in all of these pictures? What are they doing in this picture? What are they doing in all of the pictures?
Read the pages. Ask, What do these pages tell us about The Little Red Hen?
Ask students to:
- Tell the story shown on the pages in their own words.
- Pretend they are Little Red Hen and do the actions mentioned as they say what each picture shows. The students say, I am Little Red Hen and I am dusting/cooking.
- Take turns to recall more of the actions: The first student says, I am Little Red Hen and I am dusting. The second student says, I am Little Red Hen and I am dusting and cooking.
- Pretend they are Little Red Hen. What would you want to say to the other animals? Who could you ask to help with the cooking/mowing?
After speaking and listening: Consolidate and review
The learning and teaching approach for speaking and listening is illustrated for students responding to the story The Little Red Hen.
Expressive oral communication
Students discuss:
- How enjoyable/interesting is the story so far?
- What made it interesting?
- How could it be made more enjoyable/interesting?
Review and evaluate
Students review and evaluate the speaking and listening strategies they used during the session. They can answer the cueing questions:
- What did I do that helped me to say what I wanted to say?
- What did I do that helped me to listen to what others said?
